Making It Local

During the construction phase of Hinkley Point C power station, it had a big challenge. Built to export energy to the entire country and employing more than 15,000 workers from all over the world during the building phase – how could they “make it local”?

The answer, in terms of food service, was Somerset Larder. The caterer was set up to make sure that Hinkley staff enjoy the best locally sourced produce, using fresh ingredients from Somerset and the wider west country.

MYA Consulting has been asked to work with Somerset Larder to give a new look and feel to the existing restaurant facilities and to wider promote this aspect of the business. It will also be designing new retail and coffee shops for the entire site.

Steve Braithwaite, Managing Director of Somerset Larder, said: “We chose MYA because it offered thought leadership in design, took time to understand the culture of our customers and demonstrated a unique design flair for the project.”

Carla Mckenzie, Managing Director of MYA, added: “Using a strong retail approach, we are planning to create a high street experience inside this massive complex.

“Somerset Larder is on a mission to deliver the best food on a construction site in Europe. And because it ‘thinks local’ it will create an economic legacy for the region, which will live on long past the building stage. We’re delighted to be on board with this important project.”
